National Waterfront Museum, Swansea, Wales

The National Waterfront Museum in Swansea (NWMS) opened in October 2005 and has been heralded as an international exemplar for its innovative architectural and interpretative design, and its role as a catalyst for the broader waterfront regeneration of Swansea. This is epitomized in NWMS winning a Regeneration Award in January 2007 for the best design-led regeneration project in the UK.

We worked with the Museum from 1998, initially to carry out a site options appraisal and then as lead consultant and principal professional advisor to the NWMS Board. As lead consultant, we provided the interface between the client organizations (National Museums and Galleries of Wales and City and County of Swansea) and the multiple consultants involved during the pre-construction phases of the project.

In doing this, we established an effective project management regime and advised on all aspects of the project during the pre-construction development, including:

  • Initial development concept and themes
  • Development of the organization and governance arrangements
  • Regularly reported to the Board and executive team
  • Selected the design team
  • Managed and coordinated outputs of the design team
  • Managed the strategic capital budget (responsible for securing the matching partnership's capital funding of £18.9 million)
  • Strategic project programming
  • Progressive business planning and market analyses
